    Scope

    A Crystal Growth Technician follows well-defined Standard Operating Procedures and Safety Practices to grow highly purified single crystal ingots, ensuring consistent product quality. When formal procedures do not exist, for example on development programs, the technician will be closely guided by a senior technician, engineer, supervisor or manager.

    Function

    The primary functions of a Crystal Growth Technician is to prepare equipment and starting materials, and carry out the procedures for growing single crystal compound semiconductors such as Indium Antimonide, Gallium Antimonide and other III-V materials. The technician may also use similar procedures when working on development projects. The technician will prepare and inspect materials at each processing step, to ensure conformance to exact customer specifications.

    Typical Duties


    • Grow Single Crystal InSb and GaSb per the Czochralski process.
    • Mix chemistry and Etch metal compounds
    • Load and unload Zone refiners used for metals purification.
    • Run saws used in the fabrication of wafers.
    • Maintain all equipment trained on ( i.e. CZ Pullers, Zone refiners, slurry saws, ID saws, etc).
    • Maintain database files to provide traceability for each crystal.
    • Maintain inventory records of materials and supplies.
    • Work within the policies and procedures of the Quality Management System (QMS).


    Education or Special Knowledge Required

    The Crystal Growth Technician should be familiar with laboratory procedures such as: handling of laboratory gases (hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen) and liquids (including acids, bases, oxidizers, liquid nitrogen, various organic solvents) and standard operating procedures. Ability to work explicitly within company safety procedures is essential.

    The Crystal Growth Technician must be able to accurately use measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers. Good manual dexterity and meticulous work habits are critical. Experience with mechanical equipment is extremely helpful. Problem solving skills are a plus in a continuous improvement environment. Minimum of a high school education required. Also essential are good communication skills (written and oral), constructive teamwork, and familiarity in using computer programs and databases, as well as electronic controls for equipment. Confidence and Coolness under pressure are key characteristics for this position.


    Working Conditions

    The Crystal Growth Technician works in various rooms from noisy shop areas to controlled clean room environments. The individual will work with various substances including: strong acids, organic solvents, and heavy metals (such as antimony).

    There is some use of potentially hazardous machinery. The applicant must be able to lift approximately 55 pounds of material a few times a week. Majority of the work will be in a standing position (approx. 75% of the workday). The applicant should be willing to work different flexible shifts (especially night shift) consisting of 8-12 hour days and able to work productively while unsupervised, either alone or in groups.
